Who makes Steelwrist tiltrotators?
Steelwrist AB was founded in 2005 by Stefan Stockhaus and Markus Nilsson to build a new generation of tiltrotators, starting in a former bus garage in Vallentuna, Sweden. It delivered its first tiltrotator, an X18, in 2006, and since 2018 its head office and production have been in Rosersberg, north of Stockholm, in a 13,500 m² factory. Steelwrist is part of the Terratech group, owned since 2019 by the Swedish investment company Solix, and is represented in 19 countries. It has held ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification since 2010.
Steelwrist has sold in the UK since 2009. In 2017 it bought its UK distributor, AgCon UK, which became Steelwrist UK Ltd, based in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, and it sells through dealers grouped by excavator brand.
Steelwrist and Volvo
Steelwrist’s first factory-fit agreement, in 2009, was with Volvo Construction Equipment, and Steelwrist became the preferred supplier of factory-mounted tiltrotators and quick couplers on Volvo excavators. In 2021 Volvo added Steelwrist SQ automatic quick couplers from the factory on crawler and wheeled excavators from 13 to 35 tonnes, and Volvo CE became the first excavator maker to join the Open-S Alliance. Volvo also lists Steelwrist S40 and S50 quick couplers as attachments for its compact excavators, such as the ECR25D.
That is why we sell the two together: see our Volvo compact excavator page for the machines.
What is a tiltrotator?
A tiltrotator sits between the excavator arm and the bucket or tool. It lets the tool turn a full 360 degrees and tilt up to 45 degrees each way, so the operator can dig, grade and place material around obstacles without moving the machine. Steelwrist says tiltrotators suit construction sites, road building, utility work, cable laying and landscaping, and that experienced operators usually estimate a productivity gain of 20 to 35 percent, depending on the job.
X-series tiltrotatorsFrom the X04 for 2 to 4 tonne excavators to the X32 for 25 to 33 tonnes.
XTR third generationImproved tilt geometry, LockSense on the larger models and OptiLube lubrication monitoring.
S and SQ quick couplersFrom the S30 for machines under 2 tonnes to the S90 and SQ90 for 70 tonnes.

Figures are Steelwrist’s. The XTR7, XTR10 and XTR13 start delivering later in 2026. For the smallest machines, Steelwrist also makes the TCX tilt coupler for excavators under 2 tonnes, XT tilt couplers for 2 to 24 tonnes and XR rotor couplers, which rotate the tool without a separate control system.
What are Open-S and SQ quick couplers?
Steelwrist’s S couplers follow the symmetrical S standard, a machine-independent standard managed by the Swedish trade association for suppliers of mobile machines, so tools from different makers can share a coupler. Its SQ couplers go further: they connect the tool’s hydraulics and electrics in the same movement as the coupler locks, so powered tools can be changed from the cab. Steelwrist and Rototilt set up Open-S, an open standard for fully automatic couplers built on the S standard, and the Open-S Alliance had more than 20 members by October 2025. Steelwrist also says it is the only maker of a symmetrical coupler cast entirely in steel.

How do Steelwrist couplers stop a tool dropping?
Steelwrist uses three safety systems, which it says comply with EN 474 and ISO 13031:
- Front Pin Lock: a mechanical lock on the front pin, introduced in 2012. A green indicator pin shows when the tool is locked and a red one when the coupler is open.
- LockSense: two independent wedges with wireless sensors that report the coupling status to a display in the cab. The sensor battery lasts about five years.
- Front Pin Hook: safety hooks on the coupler, for compact excavators.
Looking after a Steelwrist tiltrotator
These checks are from Steelwrist’s service manual for the X04 to X32:
- Daily: look for cracks, check the coupler locks properly (with Front Pin Lock, only the green pin should show when locked), and check the hoses, wiring and indicators. On SQ couplers, clean the couplings and electrical connector and check the seals are in place. Grease the tilt cylinder yoke and the tilt and tilt cylinder shafts.
- Weekly: check the shaft bearings for wear, and grease the gearbox, locking pin bushings and Front Pin Lock.
- Grease: an EP2 / NLGI 2 grease with a base oil viscosity above 180 cSt at 40°C. Do not over-grease: no more than five pumps a week in total on the gearbox nipples, which can otherwise push an O-ring out of place, and one pump per 24 hours at each other nipple.
- At 250 and 500 hours: check whether the tilt shafts need shimming. A professional service is due at the first machine service or 500 hours at the latest, then every 500 hours.
The XTR range has lubrication-free, triple-sealed bearings in the main joints of the XTR20, and its OptiLube system tells the operator when the lubricant cartridge needs changing.
Where is the serial number on a Steelwrist?
On an aluminium plate with the Steelwrist logo, on the upper body near where the product connects to the coupler or the digger arm. The plate shows the serial number, the product code and the year of manufacture, and the serial number is also on the Certificate of Conformity. Steelwrist needs it for any warranty claim.
Steelwrist warranty
Steelwrist tiltrotators and quick couplers carry a 12 month or 1,600 hour warranty, whichever comes first. Steelwrist extends it free to 24 months or 3,200 hours if you register the product with Steelwrist within a month of putting it to work and follow the service schedule in the manual.
