Who makes Multi Sweep sweepers?
Multi Sweep is an Irish brand, still owned by the O’Flynn family. The business started in 1980 as O’Flynn Forklifts, selling and looking after industrial and rough-terrain forklifts. Liam O’Flynn built a prototype fork-mounted road sweeper for one of his biggest customers and called it the Multi Sweep, other yards wanted one, and the range grew from there. The sweepers are built at the company’s base on the Mallow Road at Kanturk, in County Cork.
Many of the design details came from customers: steel kingpins at the front in place of castors, solid wheels in place of pneumatic tyres, a steel cover over the broom motor, and a self-powered side kerb brush whose hoses are routed so the oil pressure holds the brush against the kerb.
Which Multi Sweep do I have?
Look at the model plate on the side of the body, next to the red and yellow Multi Sweep badge.
| Model | Width | Capacity | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 270 | 1.2 m | 270 litres | Narrow aisles, on a forklift |
| 425 / 425C | 2 m | 400 litres | Transport, joinery, recycling and plant hire (no longer in the range) |
| 500 | 2.2 m | A larger container than the 425 | Multi Sweep’s newest model and best seller |
| 725 / 725C | 2 m | 725 litres | The “Workhorse”: construction, grain stores, large industrial sites |
| 900 | 2.4 m | 900 litres | “The Beast”: concrete plants, quarries, timber yards and ports |
Figures are Multi Sweep’s. Getting the model right matters for parts: the front kingpin on the 725 is a different part from the one on the 425 and 500, while the rear kingpin fits all three.

How does a Multi Sweep fit?
The sweeper slides onto the carrier’s forks through fork pockets and is held by fork lock catches. The 500 and 725 can also go on a tractor’s three-point linkage or A-frame, and Multi Sweep offers quick hitch plates for some telehandlers and skid steers. The broom runs from the carrier’s auxiliary (third function) hydraulics, and reversing the flow tips the debris container; Multi Sweep says the quick-release couplings must be half-inch bore or larger so the oil flow is not restricted. Where the carrier has no spare hydraulics, a power pack drives the sweeper on its own.
Options include a gravity water system with twin tanks for dust suppression, and a side kerb brush on the left, right or both sides. On the 500, handles on top let the operator lower the broom as it wears, without tools.

Getting the best from a Multi Sweep
Multi Sweep’s operating instructions say to sweep at the carrier’s idle speed, in first or second gear, at 2 to 4 mph: more engine revs spin the broom faster but do not sweep better, and only wear the broom. Keep the sweeper on the ground when you stop the broom, so the container does not open by accident, and close the container by lowering the sweeper while moving forward rather than standing still, which saves wear on the retaining pins.
Servicing a Multi Sweep
- Before use: check bolts and fittings are tight, and grease the wheels and kingpins. Every wheel and kingpin has a grease point; Multi Sweep recommends a premium lithium-based grease.
- Kingpins: if play develops in the kingpins, replace the brass wear bushes.
- Wheels: replace a wheel when the solid rubber has worn close to the steel centre. The axle reduction bush can move across to the new wheel.
- Main broom: adjust for wear by moving the adjustment blocks on each side to the lower position. Replace the broom when the bristles are down to about 11.5 cm (4.5 in) from the tip to the steel centre band. Multi Sweep recommends changing the broom bearing and springs with the broom, because the bearing bolts can shear.
- Kerb brush: take up wear on the threaded adjuster; when it is fully worn, replace the brush head. Too much ground pressure shortens its life.
- Dust apron: check it every three months and replace it if torn; the lower edge should just touch the ground.
- Through the year: grease the broom bearing and check broom wear at six and nine months, and at twelve months check the broom and its bearing and replace them if needed. On power pack models, change the hydraulic return filter every twelve months.

Questions
Is SM Plant Sales an authorised Multi Sweep dealer?
Yes. SM Plant Sales in Rugby is an authorised Multi Sweep dealer, and Multi Sweep’s own UK dealer list named SM Plant as far back as 2010. Call 01788 555377, Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5pm.
Where are Multi Sweep sweepers made?
In Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland, by the O’Flynn family business that has built them for over thirty years.
Is the Multi Sweep 425 still made?
No. The 425 dropped out of Multi Sweep’s range between 2019 and 2022, but its parts are still available, and several, such as the rear kingpin, are shared with the 500 and 725.
When should I replace a Multi Sweep broom?
Multi Sweep says to replace the main broom when the bristles are worn to about 11.5 cm (4.5 in), measured from the tip to the steel centre band, and to change the broom bearing and springs at the same time.
What hydraulics does a Multi Sweep need?
It runs from the carrier’s auxiliary hydraulics, with quick-release couplings of half-inch bore or larger. Where there is no auxiliary supply, a power pack can drive it.
How fast should I sweep with a Multi Sweep?
At the carrier’s idle speed in first or second gear, about 2 to 4 mph. Higher revs spin the broom faster but do not sweep better, and wear the broom out sooner.
