Who makes Sullair?
Sullair was founded in Michigan City, Indiana, on 14 July 1965, and says it was one of the first companies to use rotary screw technology in air compressors. In 2017 Hitachi agreed to buy the Sullair compressor business for US$1.245 billion, and Sullair became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi that July. In April 2023 the company changed its name to Hitachi Global Air Power, still headquartered in Michigan City, with Sullair kept as a product brand and factories in Michigan City and Suzhou, China.
Sullair’s main business is portable and industrial compressors. Its pneumatic hand tools for the building trade, the MK paving breakers and SK chipping hammers, were sold in Europe by Sullair Europe, based at Montbrison in France. Sullair’s current European website lists compressors, dryers, filters and vacuum pumps, but not air tools, so for Sullair tool parts the part numbers matter most.
Which Sullair tools do you support?
The MK210 is a paving breaker, the SK5S a pick hammer and the MLC-10 a chipping hammer.
| MK210 | SK5S | MLC-10 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | 21 kg | 5.1 kg | 12 lb (about 5.4 kg) |
| Blows a minute | 1,380 | 2,940 | 2,940 |
| Air use | 1,100 l/min (38.5 cfm) | 480 l/min (17 cfm) | 17 cfm |
| Tool fitting | 1 in x 4 1/4 in shank | Hexagonal | Round or hex, oval collar retainer |
| Features | Anti-freeze, independently suspended anti-vibration handles | D handle | D handle, four-bolt backhead |
Figures are from Sullair’s own data sheets (the MK210 and the 5 kg SK5 from Sullair Europe, the MLC-10 from Sullair’s Americas range). Sullair Europe’s range also included the 25 kg MK250 and 33 kg MK31+ breakers and chipping hammers from 3.7 to 15.6 kg; we list a handle for the MK250.
What are Sullair breakers and pick hammers for?
Sullair Europe’s product guide put the 3 to 5 kg chipping hammers, such as the SK5S, to work removing plaster, roughening surfaces, taking up tiles and sealing, and the 21 to 33 kg paving breakers, such as the MK210, to larger demolition: screeds, flagstones, concrete and road breaking. For small demolition with a chipping hammer or concrete breaker, it matched the tools to a compressor of 2.0 to 2.4 m³/min. A CompAir C20, for example, delivers 2.0 m³/min.
Looking after Sullair air tools
- Lubrication: Sullair says that in normal conditions the oil carried over from the compressor, plus moisture in the air, usually lubricates its breakers and chipping hammers enough, and that lubricating the tool by hand before storage is sufficient. Sullair also sells line oilers for the air hose.
- Low maintenance by design: Sullair lists fewer wearing parts and minimal on-site lubrication as benefits of the MK210, and its anti-freeze design stops the breaker icing up.
- Wear parts: on Sullair breakers, Sullair names the chuck bushing, latch retainer and roll pins as replaceable parts; on chipping hammers, the retainers and lock springs.
Which Sullair parts do you stock?
We list 21 Sullair parts, most of them for the MK210 breaker: the trigger, trigger pin and springs, handle screws, distribution valve and valve seals, swivel fitting and coupling nut, plus throttle valve, inlet swivel and muffler kits. We also list a washer and an M12 self-locking nut used in the engine and compressor mountings of Sullair’s S35 and S45 portable compressors.
