What is a micro digger?

A micro digger is a small excavator, usually up to about 1.5 tonnes, narrow enough for gardens and tight access. SM Plant Sales in Rugby sells Volvo's smallest diggers, the 1.5 tonne EC15E and the 1.8 tonne EC18E, new and used: both narrow to 995 mm and stand under 2.35 m high. Call the sales team on 01788 555377 for prices and availability.

  • Volvo EC15E: 1,640 kg with a cab (1,556 kg with a canopy), 995 mm wide.
  • Volvo EC18E: 1,810 kg with a cab (1,726 kg with a canopy), undercarriage from 995 mm to 1,350 mm wide.
  • Both: Volvo D0.9A engine, 12 kW gross, Stage V, under 2.35 m high.
  • Used machines are listed with year, hours and price, ex VAT and ex works Rugby.

There is no fixed definition. Most people mean a digger of up to about 1.5 tonnes, narrow enough for a garden gate or side passage and light enough to move on a small trailer. Volvo's range starts at 1.5 tonnes with the EC15E. The EC18E is the next size up: its undercarriage pulls in below 1 m to get through a gap and widens to 1.35 m for stability when digging.

Figures are Volvo CE's. Volvo says the EC15E can travel on a small trailer with up to three buckets and a hydraulic breaker at a total transport weight under 2 tonnes. Its EC18E brochure gives a maximum digging depth of 2,500 mm, or 2,700 mm with the long arm.

EC15E or EC18E?

The EC15E is the lighter machine and the easier one to move. The EC18E weighs 170 kg more and, Volvo says, has 13% more traction force and an 11% longer undercarriage than the generation before it; with the undercarriage out at 1.35 m it is steadier when digging. New or used?

A new machine comes with the latest engine standard and the maker's own warranty; a used one costs less up front. Every used machine on this page shows its year, hours and price. Our guides to new or used plant and buying a used mini excavator cover the trade-offs and what to check.

Parts, bigger machines and servicing

The Parts by machine finder has pages for the EC15E and EC18E, and our Volvo parts range lists 400 parts. For bigger machines, see midi excavators and new Volvo mini diggers. For repairs, see servicing.
