What is a midi excavator?

A midi excavator is a digger of about 5 to 10 tonnes, between a mini digger and a full-size excavator. There is no fixed definition, but a midi excavator usually means a machine of about 5 to 10 tonnes: big enough for footings, drainage runs and site clearance, and small enough to work on house plots and in streets. In Volvo's range that means the 6 tonne EC60E (replaced by the EC65 in January 2026), the ECR58 and the ECR88D (replaced by the ECR90).

Figures are from Volvo CE's EC60E brochure. The EC60E on our site is listed with a long dipper, hydraulic hitch, boom and dipper check valves, a refuelling pump and heavy-duty Harford buckets. Volvo says the EC65 that replaced it has 4% more engine power and 9% more boom lifting force, so ask us about either.

What does ECR mean on a Volvo excavator?

ECR models, such as the ECR58D and ECR88D, are Volvo's short swing radius excavators: the back of the machine stays close to the tracks as it turns, so it can work beside a wall or in one lane of a road. EC models, such as the EC60E, swing a longer tail: 1,650 mm from the centre on the EC60E.

New or used?

A new machine comes with the latest engine standard and the maker's own warranty; a used one costs less up front. Every used machine on this page shows its year, hours and price. Our guides to new or used plant and buying a used mini excavator cover the trade-offs and what to check.

Parts, smaller machines and servicing

The Parts by machine finder has pages for the EC60E, ECR58D and ECR88D, and our Volvo parts range lists 400 parts. For smaller machines, see micro diggers and new Volvo mini diggers. For repairs, see servicing.

Questions

What size is a midi excavator?

There is no fixed definition, but a midi excavator usually weighs about 5 to 10 tonnes. The Volvo EC60E weighs 5,730 to 6,099 kg, depending on its tracks and arm.

How big is a 6 tonne digger?

Taking the Volvo EC60E: 1,920 mm wide, 2,584 mm to the top of the cab and about 5.8 m long, with a 1,650 mm tail swing radius. It digs to 3,695 mm, or 3,995 mm with the long arm.

Can you tow a 6 tonne digger?

Not behind a car or van: a 6 tonne machine is well over the 3,500 kg most vehicles can tow, so midi excavators travel on a plant lorry. We can arrange transport from Rugby at extra cost.

What replaced the Volvo EC60E?

The Volvo EC65, launched in January 2026. Volvo says it has 4% more engine power and 9% more boom lifting force than the EC60E. Call 01788 555377 to ask about either; we still sell parts for the EC60E.

Do you sell used midi excavators?

Yes, when we have them. Used machines on this page show their year, hours and price, ex VAT and ex works Rugby. Stock changes often, so call the sales team on 01788 555377 to ask what is coming in.
